Description

What is Flovent used for?

Flovent inhaler also known as Flixotide is used to prevent asthma attacks and to control and prevent symptoms such as wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. The medication fluticasone works by decreasing the swelling and irritation in the airways to allow for easier breathing. It also prevents the release of substances in the body which may cause inflammation in your lungs. Fluticasone helps to control asthma and its symptoms but does not cure it. Your symptoms should start to improve up to 24 hours after you begin to use your Flovent inhaler but it may take up to two weeks of regular use before you feel the full benefit of this medication.

How to use Flovent Inhaler

This medication must be used regularly to be effective. Inhale this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor. This medication is usually prescribed to be taken twice a day, in the morning and evening. If two puffs have been prescribed per dose, wait 30 seconds between puffs. Flovent does not work immediately and is not a quick-relief inhaler to relieve sudden asthma attacks. Your doctor should also prescribe a short-acting inhaler to use during such asthma attacks.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds before each use.
  • Take this inhaler orally as directed by your doctor. This medication should be taken regularly, usually two doses per day. It is best to take the medication at a similar time each day, morning and night.
  • Flovent inhaler is an aerosol form of fluticasone supplied as in inhaler. It creates a spray that you inhale through your mouth.
  • If your doctor prescribes you two puffs per dose, wait 30 seconds between puffs, shaking the inhaler well between puffs.
  • Rinse your mouth with water, but do not swallow, after using this medicine. Pay special attention to your dental hygiene when using this medicine.
  • Each inhaler is designed to be used for 120 puffs. Keep a track of how many puffs you use and discard the inhaler after the designated number have been taken.
  • Do not use your Flovent inhaler if you are next to a heat source or open flame. The inhaler may explode if it is exposed to very high temperatures.
  • Store Flovent away from moisture, heat and light, with the mouthpiece down.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • If you have ever had any bacterial, viral or fungal infection.
  • If you have ever had glaucoma, herpes infection of the eye or cataracts.
  • If you have ever had tuberculosis, liver disease, low bone mineral density or a weak immune system.
  • If you are pregnant, planning on pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Also be aware that:

  • This medication is to be used regularly at the same times each day. It is not a quick-relief inhaler to be taken during an asthma attack.
  • Long term use of steroids could lead to bone loss, especially if you do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet, do not exercise sufficiently or if you smoke.
  • Flovent is not approved for use by anyone younger than 4 years old and other young children may get better results using a spacer device and face mask with this medication. Fluticasone may cause children to grow more slowly. Your child’s doctor will carefully watch your child’s growth while taking this medication.
  • This medication could mask the signs of infection. Make sure to always wash your hands well to prevent the spread of infection, and avoid contact with people who have contagious diseases such as chickenpox, measles or the flu.

Side Effects

Common side-effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Headache or toothache.
  • Stuffy or runny nose.
  • Fever or ear infection
  • Hoarseness, sore or irritated throat.
  • Painful white patches in the mouth or throat.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side-effects:

  • Hives, rashes or itching.
  • Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs.
  • Difficulty in breathing or swallowing.
  • Coughing or a shortness of breath.
