What is Advair Diskus?

Advair Diskus (Fluticasone Propion-Salmeterol) is an asthma medication used to control and prevent symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath that are brought on by asthma or ongoing lung disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This asthma inhaler is a combination of two drugs: fluticasone (corticosteroid) and salmeterol (long-acting beta-agonist). The fluticasone reduces the irritation and swelling of one’s airways whereas the salmeterol opens up the airways. The combination of both these drugs significantly lowers the serious risks of using a long-acting beta-agonist, such as salmeterol, alone. Both of these medicines work together to make breathing easier, as it should be. Having breathing problems leads to decreased time from work, school, and enjoyment of daily life. Advair Diskus is to be used regularly as an asthma treatment. It should not be used as a quick-relief inhaler in situations of emergency such as an asthma attack. Always use Advair Diskus as directed by one’s physician. Read and understand the Patient Information leaflet before using this medication each time. To use the inhaler properly, follow the illustrated instructions. Depending on which brand you are using, the asthma inhaler should either be level (flat) or in a vertical position. Once you have it in its correct position, inhale the medication orally, usually twice daily, or as otherwise specified by your doctor. You may or may not taste or feel the drug after inhaling (either or which is perfectly fine). It’s important that you do not exhale back into the inhaler. Close the asthma inhaler after every use. Gargle and rinse your mouth with water after each dose to prevent bad taste in mouth and/or infection. Wait at least 1 minute between using other inhalers and ensure you use this one last. Also, if you have previously been using a quick-relief inhaler on a regular basis, you must stop this and only use it in cases of emergency such as a sudden shortness of breath. If you regularly take another oral corticosteroid you should continue on it unless your doctor specifies otherwise. It is unwise to suddenly stop this corticosteroid as it can worsen your condition as well as cause withdrawal symptoms. Do not change your Advair dosage without talking to your doctor. Ask your doctor for questions for your asthma medication or about how to taper off your schedule if needed.

Prior to using Advair Diskus, tell your doctor:

• If you are allergic to Fluticasone or Salmeterol or any other allergies you do have
• Your medical history especially pertaining to current and past infections, bone loss, high blood pressure, heart disease including heart attack, overactive thyroid, diabetes, seizures, etc.
• If you have recently been exposed to an infection as this drug can mask signs of an infection.
• If you have recently switched from an oral corticosteroid to this inhaler within the past year as it can affect how much physical stress your body can handle.
• If you are or are planning to become pregnant
• If you plan to breast-feed

Also, be aware that

• The long-acting beta-agonist (salmeterol) may cause QT prolongation: a condition that affects heart rhythm. QT prolongation can rarely cause serious symptoms such as irregular or fast heartbeat, fainting, and severe dizziness. If you experience one or any of these, get medical help immediately.
• Having certain medical conditions such as heart problems, taking other drugs that can cause it, and low levels of certain minerals such as magnesium or potassium in the blood may increase your risk of getting QT prolongation
• Older adults with COPD may be at a greater risk for pneumonia while using this inhaler
• A child’s growth may be slowed if used for a long time. Get regular checkups for your child’s height while using this inhaler. The final effect on adult height is not known yet.

If your condition doesn’t improve or worsens, let your physician know immediately.

Common Advair Diskus side effects include but are not limited to:

• Hoarseness
• Throat irritation
• Headache or stomach upset

If any of these effects persist or worsen immediately tell your doctor or pharmacist. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these rarer side effects:

• White patches on the tongue or anywhere in the mouth
• Mental changes such as nervousness
• Vision changes such as blurred vision
• Muscle cramps or shakiness/tremors
• Signs of infection such as fever

Get medical help right away if you experience any of these side effects of Advair Diskus:

• Sudden and severe worsening of breathing problems immediately after use
• Chest pain
• Severe dizziness, fainting, or seizures
• Fast or very irregular heartbeat
• A very serious allergic reaction such as rash/itching/swelling, especially of the face, tongue, and throat.

• Regularly check your blood pressure and report to your doctor if the results are high.
