Benicar HCT (olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide) is a drug used to treat high blood pressure. The two medications it is made up of work together to reduce hypertension. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill that helps prevent too much salt absorption by increasing the production of urine. Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels allowing easy passage of blood thus lowering blood pressure.

Always use Benicar HCT as directed by one’s physician. Take this medication orally usually once or twice daily with or without food, or as directed by one’s doctor. Benicar HCT can cause increased urination so it’s best to keep this in mind when it is close to one’s bedtime. • Have medical history of gout, kidney or liver disease, lupus, skin cancer, or severe dehydration

• Have diabetes as this medication can affect your blood sugar

After using this medication, consult with your doctor if you:

• Experience prolonged diarrhea or vomiting

• Get sunburned, skin blisters or develop new moles/skin lesions

If your condition doesn’t improve or worsens, let your physician know immediately.

Side effects include but are not limited to:

• Dizziness, lightheadedness;
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding;

Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• Fainting
• Decrease in vision or eye pain
• Unexplained muscle weakness
• Signs of kidney disease
• Symptoms of dehydration or mineral loss such as extreme thirst and dry mouth
• Persistent and severe dizziness
• Persistent and severe diarrhea
• Severe allergic reaction

If any of these effects persist or worsen immediately tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Q: Can I take Benicar HCT if I am pregnant?

A: It is STRONGLY advised against using this medication when pregnant due to a very real risk to the unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are or become pregnant while on Benicar HCT.
