What is Prilosec?

Prilosec is a brand name for the medication omeprazole, which belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It is commonly used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid production, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Follow Your Doctor's Instructions: Always take Prilosec exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. They will determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment based on your medical condition.

Take With or Without Food: Prilosec can be taken with or without food. However, it's typically best to take it before a meal, preferably in the morning.

Swallow Whole: Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the capsule, as this can affect the release of the medication.

Do Not Double Up: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Continue Treatment: Even if you start feeling better, continue taking Prilosec for the full prescribed length of time unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Stopping the medication prematurely may result in the return of symptoms.

Inform Your Doctor: Inform your doctor about any other medications, vitamins, or supplements you are currently taking, as certain drugs may interact with Prilosec.

Consult Your Doctor for Special Situations: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking Prilosec. Additionally, if you have any other medical conditions, such as liver disease or low magnesium levels, inform your doctor before starting treatment with Prilosec.

Monitor for Side Effects: While Prilosec is generally well-tolerated, like all medications, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Always remember to consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of Prilosec. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.

How long does it take for Prilosec to work?

Prilosec may provide relief from symptoms within a few days, but it may take up to four weeks for full effectiveness in treating conditions like GERD and erosive esophagitis.

Can I take Prilosec with other medications?

Always consult your doctor before taking Prilosec with other medications, as it may interact with certain drugs, including clopidogrel, antifungal medications, and HIV protease inhibitors, among others.

Can I stop taking Prilosec if my symptoms improve?

It's important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve. Stopping Prilosec prematurely may result in the return of symptoms.

Can I take Prilosec long-term?

Long-term use of Prilosec may increase the risk of certain side effects, such as bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, your doctor will monitor your condition and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

I've been a Canadian Med Center customer for about 6 years now. In all that time there was never once that I considered taking my business elsewhere. They do a great job and the people they contract with are also super.

Always appreciate their prompt service but especially appreciate their hanging in there when there was difficulty getting my doctor to renew my prescription!
